THIRTY-NINE

I sit on the recliner in the living room, toes curled around the edge of an ottoman, one of my mom’s coffee table books balanced on my knees. Snippets of her conversation with Ms. Lynn, a diatribe of which designs they would and wouldn’t wear, invade my thoughts as a Project Runway marathon plays on the TV.

For the hundredth time, I consider calling Jimmy. This isn’t something I think I have the strength to do on my own. But I need to try. For me, for Emma, for the friends we used to be.

Emma was a private person. I know she wouldn’t want me sharing her most intimate details if I could avoid it. So I’m just going to have to make this work—using my mom and Ms. Lynn for moral support without them knowing what I’m really up to.

I draw a deep breath and brace myself for the task at hand. Opening the heavy book, I hold it in a way that conceals the inner pages. A picture of a Gauguin painting is blocked by the sheaf of papers that comprise Emma’s autopsy report. I flip to the page where I left off, leaving the external examination and beginning the internal findings.

I don’t understand most of what I’m reading. Descriptions of organs are not my strong suite, and the medical jargon may as well be Greek, but there’s a nifty sentence at the end of each section stating that the body part in question appears normal and without visible signs of pathology.

Glancing across the room, I make sure my mom and Ms. Lynn are still occupied before turning the page. Several sentences into a description of Emma’s brain, I stumble over a word I do recognize. Lesions. I begin the section again, reading with more care.

Brain is of average weight and size for gender and age. Meninges appear shiny and unremarkable. Examination of thin prep slices reveals the presence of multiple subpial cortical lesions and areas of demyelination. Findings suggest that the deceased suffered from multiple sclerosis, degree of symptomology and severity unknown.
